One of the things I always try to do when I interview providers, staff, or patients is give them a “wish.” I tell them to imagine that I could give them any single thing to improve things. I keep it kind of general because I want their answers to show me both what needs improving and also what their priorities are.

I’m almost always amazed and humbled by the responses. Because given a chance to wish for anything at all, they almost always choose something that would make things better for their patients rather than for themselves. It shows you what kind of people work in healthcare. They are so empathetic and selfless that it humbles me to be able to work with them.

It makes sense when you think about it. To get into healthcare they all had to choose some special training. They all had to come to a realization that they would be doing a job where the prime benefits would often come to their customers rather than themselves. They signed up for long hours and hard work in the service of others. So it shouldn’t surprise me so much that they choose wishes that serve others as well.

Sometimes I can make their wishes come true. That’s the best part of my job.

What would be your wish? Send me a note to Jake@wecreateloyalty.com
